What is a deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage works below the surface. Instead of the long, flowing strokes of a Swedish session, your therapist uses slower, more deliberate movements and sustained pressure — forearms, thumbs and elbows — to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the fascia that wraps around it. The pace is unhurried on purpose: deep muscle does not release when it is rushed.

This is the treatment for tension that has settled in and stayed. A neck that has been stiff for months, a lower back that aches by Wednesday, shoulders that creep towards the ears during every long meeting, calves tight from running or from standing all day. Rather than treating the whole body evenly, your therapist spends most of the session on the areas that actually need the work.

Firm does not mean painful. There is a productive kind of discomfort when a therapist finds a genuine knot, and there is pain, which is counterproductive and makes muscles guard. Your therapist will keep checking, and you should speak up the moment it crosses that line.

Benefits of deep tissue massage

  • Releases long-standing knots and adhesions in the deeper muscle layers
  • Targets chronic neck, shoulder and lower back tightness
  • Helps restore range of movement restricted by tight tissue
  • Supports recovery after training, running or heavy physical work
  • Reduces the postural strain of long hours at a desk or behind a wheel
  • Concentrated time on the areas that genuinely need it

What to expect in your session

  1. Detailed consultation

A longer conversation than usual. Tell us exactly where the problem is, how long it has been there, what makes it worse, and about any injury, surgery or medical condition.

  2. Warming the tissue

Your therapist begins with broader, warmer strokes. Deep work on cold muscle is uncomfortable and far less effective, so the first several minutes are preparation.

  3. Focused deep work

Slow, sustained pressure on the problem areas, with your feedback guiding the depth throughout. Breathe steadily into the pressure rather than holding your breath.

  4. Steam and aftercare

Your complimentary 15-minute steam helps the worked muscles settle. Drink plenty of water afterwards; mild tenderness for a day is normal and passes.

Who it suits — and who it does not

Deep tissue suits desk workers with chronic neck and shoulder tension, drivers and delivery riders, gym-goers and runners with tight hamstrings or calves, and anyone whose tension has not responded to a lighter massage. It is not the right choice if you are pregnant, recovering from a recent injury or surgery, bruise very easily, or simply want to switch off — choose Swedish or aroma massage instead, and speak to your doctor first if you have a medical condition.

Deep Tissue Massage — frequently asked questions

Will it hurt?

You should feel firm, purposeful pressure and sometimes a productive ache where a knot is being released — but never sharp or unbearable pain. Tell your therapist immediately and the pressure is reduced.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Mild tenderness in the worked areas for 24 to 48 hours is common and normal, similar to the day after a hard workout. Water, gentle movement and a warm shower help.

Is 60 minutes enough?

For one focused area such as the neck and shoulders, yes. If you want the back, shoulders and legs all addressed properly, book 90 minutes — deep work genuinely needs the time.

Can I have deep tissue every week?

For an acute problem area, weekly for a few weeks is reasonable. Once it settles, most guests move to once or twice a month.
