What is a thai massage?

Thai massage is different from every other treatment on our menu, and guests are often surprised by it the first time. There is little or no oil, you stay in loose, comfortable clothing, and rather than lying passively you are guided through a sequence of assisted stretches while your therapist applies rhythmic pressure with palms, thumbs, forearms and feet along the body's traditional energy lines.

People sometimes describe it as having yoga done for you. The therapist supports your body into positions you would struggle to reach alone and holds them just long enough for the tissue to release, moving in a steady, unbroken rhythm from the feet upwards. The work is methodical and the pace is calm, even though the session is physically active.

What it does especially well is mobility. Hips that have tightened from years of sitting, hamstrings shortened by running, a stiff upper back and locked shoulders all respond to being moved and lengthened rather than only pressed. Most guests leave feeling taller and looser rather than sleepy.

Benefits of thai massage

  • Noticeably improves flexibility and range of movement
  • Opens tight hips, hamstrings and the lower back
  • Releases stiffness through the shoulders and upper back
  • Energising rather than sedating — good for a daytime session
  • No oil, so you can return straight to your day
  • Combines stretching with sustained acupressure in one treatment

What to expect in your session

  1. Consultation

We ask about your mobility, any joint or back problems, recent injuries and how much stretching you are used to, then set the intensity accordingly.

  2. Comfortable clothing

Thai massage is performed clothed. Wear or change into loose, stretchable clothing — we can provide suitable garments if you arrive in office wear.

  3. On the mat

The session takes place on a comfortable floor mat rather than a table, which gives your therapist the leverage to support you properly through each stretch.

  4. Steam and finish

Your complimentary 15-minute steam afterwards helps the newly lengthened muscles settle comfortably.

Who it suits — and who it does not

Thai massage suits runners, gym-goers and cyclists, desk workers with tight hips and a stiff back, anyone who wants to feel energised rather than sleepy, and guests who dislike oil-based treatments. It is not suitable during pregnancy, or if you have osteoporosis, a disc problem, a recent fracture, joint replacement or acute injury — tell us beforehand and we will recommend a gentler alternative.

Thai Massage — frequently asked questions

Do I need to be flexible?

Not at all. Your therapist works within your range, not beyond it, and the stretches are adjusted to whatever your body can comfortably do on the day.

Is it painful?

It should feel like a firm, satisfying stretch. Sharp pain is a signal to stop — tell your therapist immediately and the position will be eased.

What should I wear?

Loose, stretchable clothing that lets you move freely. Tell us when booking and we can provide suitable garments.

Is oil used?

Very little or none, which is one reason many guests book Thai massage during the day — you can go straight back to work afterwards.
